You are an ambassador for Christ

For many of us, there is little that is more frightening than to hear Jesus say in Mark 16:15, “As you go into all the world, proclaim the gospel to everyone.”

The thought of sharing the gospel can be truly petrifying. “How do I do it? What do I say? What if they outright reject me? What if they ask something and I don’t know how to respond? Do we even have a right to do this? Is it really MY role? There are those who can do this so much better than me… I should just let them do it.”

Here’s short but heartwarming story we received from Sheffield.

My husband and I lead the International Ministry at our church here in Sheffield. We reach those from other countries who have come to Sheffield to either study or live.

We are planning on using The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus with our group as part of our teaching plan. At the moment we have eight Internationals with us plus twelve people in our team.

Worldview Rethink Workshop in Edmonton, Alberta

On Saturday, we held a Worldview Rethink Workshop at Bethel Gospel Church. It was a wonderful time with close to 90 participants from in and around Edmonton. We had five different staff share on how a regular believer can cultivate a lifelong lifestyle of sharing the gospel.

One day during the course of his daily routine, Tim* came across a man along the street and they struck up a conversation. As they chatted, Tim learned that the man was “religious” and that he enjoyed reading books. A light went on in Tim’s mind—this man would be interested in reading a book about the Bible! Tim asked the homeless man to wait and hurried back to his car to get the copy of By This Name that he knew was on the back deck of the rear window. To his surprise, the book wasn’t there! Then he recalled that he had already given it away. Now he didn’t have anything to give to the man and the opportunity to share the Gospel with this homeless man was lost.

Calvin* and a friend were going on a four-day road trip for a conference. They estimated that it would take four days by car to get to their destination and they planned on stopping for meals at diners and restaurants. As part of the trip, they loaded the car with copies of By This Name with the intention of giving them out at every place they stopped for food.

Ever consider your handyman?

I was having a chat with the handyman who had come over to my house to fix a leaky pipe. He had paused for coffee and we took a few minutes to chat. I learnt that he was more than just a handyman—he was a husband, father, grandfather, a house builder, a chicken farmer and a fan of folk music. He was not a stranger anymore but someone I knew. He was someone I could share the Gospel with. Just before he left, I asked if he preferred reading or listening to a story. He said he wasn’t much of a reader so I reached into my Be Ready Box (BRB) and offered him the audiobook version of “The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus” as a token of my thanks. He accepted.

[This post is part of our “Give away the gospe” series. Eric* writes from his personal experience.]

One day three years after receiving a bone marrow transplant, I was in the cancer clinic for my annual check-up. As I sat in the lab, a young nurse came to do routine blood work. I asked her, “Are you taking a vacation this year?”

She replied, “Yes, I am starting my holidays day after tomorrow.” She went on to say that she was leaving on a trip to Dubai to see a friend. I asked her how long the flight was, and she told me that with layovers and flight time, the trip was almost a full 24 hours. I asked her if she liked reading. She said she did.

Children with a passion for the gospel

We received a note from a parent on how her two children have a passion for sharing the gospel with their friends.

Our 4th grade daughter decided that she wanted to give The Lamb as a part of her Valentine’s to her classmates. We are not allowed to distribute these at our public school, so she plans to mail them. Our 7th grade son takes [copies of] The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus wherever he goes to give to his friends. There is no greater joy than when your own children walk in the truth!

We think we can learn so much about giving the Gospel from them. They use every opportunity to share the good news to people in their lives, even Valentine’s Day. Maybe we can pause to think how we can share the good news with those in our lives.

Give away the gospel during Lunar New Year!

Chinese New Year decorations

(This post is part of our “Give away the gospel” series.)

Lunar New Year is coming! Chinese, Vietnamese and Koreans in Australia, Canada, the US, Europe and, of course, in every corner of Asia, are getting ready to celebrate this major festival on the Lunar calendar.

If you were to visit a Chinese home during this season, you might find greetings and wishes in red and gold adorning the house, while pots of New Year plants and lanterns grace the entrances. Mandarin oranges would be carefully arranged in baskets alongside jars and trays of New Year goodies. The air would be filled with the aroma of pots of delicacies gently cooking in the kitchen. Occasionally, you might hear the booms and clangs of drums and cymbals of a passing lion dance troupe or the tunes of New Year music coming from a music player.

This “John 3:16” makes no sense to me…

John 3:16 in the Bible

(This post is part of our “Give away the gospel” series.)

A GoodSeed staff member tells us of a Thai friend who was trying to understand what the Bible was all about. He writes:

My Thai friend Aroon* told me that he used to have a manager who was a Christian. This manager had spent several months trying to explain the good news of the Bible to him. He used John 3:16 as his starting point. He told Aroon, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only begotten son…”

Aroon halted his manager right there and articulated several problems he had with that verse. First of all, God to him was not a person. God was a universal force, the kind of force that holds the universe together, like gravity. Aroon couldn’t understand how a force could love him. Secondly, what was love anyway? Was love just a warm feeling in the heart? And this universal force had a son? How could that be? If God had a son, did he also have a wife?

The problem was that Aroon had absolutely no background about God and the Bible. Those very precious words had a different meaning for him because he lacked the biblical perspective.
