Refugees on Christmas Island

Australia regularly receives boatloads of refugees seeking asylum. Many of these people from surrounding nations are genuine asylum seekers, while others are not. It’s a challenge for the government to discern the difference as it processes these people arriving on its shores.

The refugees are temporarily housed on Christmas Island while their cases are being investigated. There are ministries on the island that provide aid to these men and women from distant places. James and Shelly Campbell* are one such ministry couple. They interact with the refugees, providing help and handing out Bibles and Christian literature to those who ask for them. At their request, our Australia office shipped them a box of What are Christmas and Easter all About? along with other GoodSeed books. The parcel was apparently lost in the mail but, thank God, it showed up two months later.

Postcards from Brazil

We recently received a long email from Brazil. A ministry there wanted to encourage us by letting us know they had received quite a number of testimonies regarding our tools. Here are a series of translated notes from them.

My mother now believes!
A missionary wrote to say that for years she had been trying to share the gospel with her own mother. When she got a copy of Portuguese edition of The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus, she used it to teach her mother and by God’s grace, her mother understood and now believes.

A visit to a Thai Youth Detention Center

A short-term missions team recently travelled to the Buddhist nation of Thailand. As part of the trip, the team visited two detention centers for youths. Altogether, they interacted with about 300 teenagers—most of whom were boys, plus a handful of girls.

The team sang songs, played games and performed a skit about Jesus to an audience who had almost no knowledge of the BIble. The team explained briefly who Jesus was, how he was crucified, and how he gained victory over sin and death. Despite the stares of the other youths, two teens responded by saying they wanted to put their trust in Jesus as their Saviour.

Me no English!

All that the Prophets have Spoken (Arabic)

Editor’s note: In a world where migration is the norm, our ears may hear the sounds of a foreign language just down the street. Are we prepared to share the gospel in another language right in our neighbourhood? Here is one man’s story of how he did it.

During Easter, Jason* went for a walk around his neighbourhood. It wasn’t a casual stroll, however. Jason carried a bag loaded with tools that explained the gospel. He was on a journey to offer people in his community a chance to examine the Bible and learn its message.

At one house, he rang the bell and a lady answered the door. He smiled warmly at her but she studied him with narrowed eyes.

“Me no English,” she muttered.

“Oh,” said Jason. “What language do you speak?”

“Arabic.”

No one has ever given me a gift before!

After church service one Sunday morning, Kevin* met a young Chinese lady who had just arrived in the U.S. to attend university. They chatted for a few minutes and Kevin found out she was taking a course on environmental issues.

“I just happen to have a book on environmental issues that I think you’ll enjoy,” he said. “I’ll pass it to you next week.”

I want your “Be Ready” box!

"Be Ready" Box

A “Be Ready” box is any box packed with a variety of GoodSeed books, DVDs and audiobooks. When an opportunity to share the gospel arises, you can dip into the box and pull out an appropriate translation or book and give it to the person you’re speaking with.

One of our staff members was teaching at a church in Arizona and he explained that as ambassadors for Christ, we ought to be ready to share the gospel whenever the opportunity arises. He explained how to pack a “Be Ready” box for the car and home.

Gloria’s* seven-year-old daughter, Jessie, recently started asking questions like “Who made the world? Where did people come from?” As a child, Gloria had gained some Bible knowledge from her Grandma and from summer camps, but now all she could tell Jessie was “God made the world.”

Would you accept life-changing truth in five minutes?

Five minutes

At GoodSeed, we encourage believers to share the gospel in two ways: give and guide.

In giving, you pass a GoodSeed tool, such as a book or audiobook, to someone else. That recipient then has an opportunity to explore for himself the message of the Bible. The book (or audiobook) is an invitation to investigate. It gives this person enough information to decide for himself if he believes the gospel. The authority is not you, the giver, but it’s the Bible as explained by the book’s author. The reader can spend as many hours as needed in exploring the message of the book.

In guiding, we are personally explaining the gospel to someone else. Asking a stranger to trust us in a span of a few minutes is very difficult, as Etienne* below, has discovered. It’s not easy to convince a stranger to believe our message if he doesn’t know who we are. Etienne has learned that time must be spent establishing trust before a listener will believe the message he is sharing.

A cycle of sin, confess… sin, confess…

Sin, Confess... Sin, Confess...Let me take a moment of your time to tell you my story–the true story of a Christian who became a Christian. No, that was not a typo! Let me explain…

I grew up in the Bible Belt surrounded by churches. The local school was called a Christian school; and most folks were called Christians. My parents also subscribed to this way of thinking. We went to church Sunday after Sunday, read our Bibles and prayed regularly. In fact, we made a good number of short-term mission trips together.

So it happened one day that the local evangelical church we attended had a joint Sunday School meeting. All the kids were gathered together to watch a film. I can’t remember what it was about but I do remember an adult stepping forward after the film and saying that if we wanted to go to heaven that we needed to invite Jesus into our hearts. So around the age of five I did just that–without telling a single soul–not even my own mother.
