It&#8217;s an account of two individuals on the road from Jerusalem to their hometown of Emmaus, and about a stranger they met. Here\u2019s their story.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Alive with a Roar\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/695892980?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>We left Jerusalem, about midday<br \/>\nAvoiding travellers along the way.<br \/>\nTaking the road alone, dusty and dry,<br \/>\nTrying to escape that prying eye.<\/p>\n<p>We argued as we walked, what could it mean<br \/>\nOf Jesus, and the miracles we\u2019d seen?<br \/>\nOf stories we\u2019d heard, of places we\u2019d been,<br \/>\nHow a lamb could atone for one\u2019s own sin.<\/p>\n<p>Half in fear, half in hope,<br \/>\nRehearsing His life, trying to cope.<br \/>\nFirst we whispered, then we cried<br \/>\nYou see, we were there when Jesus died.<\/p>\n<p>Then a stranger joined us unaware\u2014<br \/>\nHis presence fresh, like a gust of air.<br \/>\nWe gave no thought, where he was from<br \/>\nAnd took no interest in how he\u2019d come.<\/p>\n<p>At first he spoke not yet a word,<br \/>\nBut listened carefully, as we conferred.<br \/>\nAs we discussed the day\u2019s events<br \/>\nAnd all that Jesus was up against.<\/p>\n<p>The stranger then spoke, as in dismay,<br \/>\n\u201cWhy do you dispute along the way?\u201d<br \/>\nStunned, we said, \u201cDidn\u2019t you see the throng,<br \/>\nThe trial, the crucifixion, the terrible wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Discouraged beyond reason, our minds in a haze,<br \/>\nCleopas asked, \u201cWhere\u2019ve you been the last three days?<br \/>\nDid you just arrive? Are you a visitor in town?<br \/>\nHave you not heard the news buzzing around?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat things?\u201d the stranger said, his face unseen.<br \/>\nCleopas replied, \u201cAbout Jesus, the Nazarene!<br \/>\nHe was powerful in action, in speech before God;<br \/>\nA man of His word, without deceit or fraud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut then, the priests, the leaders of our land<br \/>\nSentenced Jesus by popular demand.<br \/>\nThey nailed Him to a cross, He was crucified;<br \/>\nIt was there on that tree, He actually died.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe grieve, for we hoped that He was the One<br \/>\nWho would redeem Israel, when things were all done.<br \/>\nInstead, He was buried in a tomb\u2014it\u2019s now the third day;<br \/>\nIt seemed all over, so we planned to travel this way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut then, today, some women we know astounded us.<br \/>\nThey arrived at the tomb early to avoid any fuss.<br \/>\nThey went with spices, as is custom to do<br \/>\nAnd found not His body or anyone else they knew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey claimed to see a vision of angels there<br \/>\nWho said Jesus was alive, and don\u2019t despair.<br \/>\nMen went to the tomb to take a look;<br \/>\nThey found Him not and returned rather shook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And then the stranger spoke, as one would grieve.<br \/>\nHe spoke of things we knew, things we believe,<br \/>\nBut he cast a fresh light on heart and mind;<br \/>\nRebuked us for being so deaf and blind.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cO foolish men, and slow of heart to believe<br \/>\nAll that the prophets have spoken, you see.<br \/>\nDid not the Messiah have to suffer these things<br \/>\nAnd enter His glory as is fitting with kings?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then starting with Moses at the front of the scroll<br \/>\nHe taught through the Prophets, he spoke to the soul.<br \/>\nHe explained God\u2019s Lamb, using all of Scripture<br \/>\nAnd helped us see Jesus in the overall picture.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, we came to Emmaus, our native hometown.<br \/>\nIt was late in the day, the sun almost down.<br \/>\nIt seemed the stranger was travelling on<br \/>\nSo we urged him, \u201cStay the night until the dawn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As we ate our meal, he broke the bread;<br \/>\nIn an instant, we saw Jesus, no longer dead.<br \/>\nOur eyes were opened, but then He was gone\u2014<br \/>\nThe One to whom our hearts had been drawn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere not our hearts burning?\u201d we both exclaimed,<br \/>\n\u201cAs we travelled the road and Jesus was named?\u201d<br \/>\nThe Scriptures made sense as never before<br \/>\nAnd something inside came alive with a roar.<\/p>\n<p>We left the same hour, in the city to find<br \/>\nThe followers of Jesus, in a new frame of mind.<br \/>\nSimon uttered words unheard before,<br \/>\n\u201cJesus I\u2019ve seen! He\u2019s alive evermore!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, we told of the One we\u2019d met that day<br \/>\nAnd the message He gave us as we travelled the way.<br \/>\nWe told of seeing Jesus, alive from the dead<br \/>\nAnd how we knew Him in the breaking of bread.<\/p>\n<p>And as in our excitement we spoke of His being,<br \/>\nOne stood in our midst, of whom we were speaking.<br \/>\nJesus appeared, the One raised from the dead;<br \/>\nWe were torn with terror and almost fled.<\/p>\n<p>But then Jesus spoke, \u201cPeace be with you,\u201d He said,<br \/>\n\u201cWhy are you troubled? Why do you dread?<br \/>\nLook, my hands, my feet; it\u2019s me you see<br \/>\nWith flesh and bones, from death now free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then He opened our minds to understand<br \/>\nHow Scripture showed that it was planned.<br \/>\nThat Moses, the Prophets, the Psalms declared,<br \/>\nMessiah must die, to a lamb compared.<\/p>\n<p>And from that day, there arose in our breast<br \/>\nA powerful fury never laid to rest:<br \/>\nTo tell all others, \u201cJesus lives today!\u201d<br \/>\nGod came as a Lamb, our sin-debt to pay.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright \u00a9 2016 by John R.
